Each year my anticipation builds as summer changes to fall and the weather starts to turn cold because I know that the aspen trees will soon become a blazing bright yellow. With snow-capped mountain peaks as the backdrop for this explosion of autumn color, the change of seasons here makes for a truly awe-inspiring view in almost every direction. This year, I traveled to Ouray, Colorado, to explore the backroads and grand vistas near this western mountain town. Situated in a river valley at nearly 8,000 feet (2,500 meters) of elevation, Ouray (pronounced “YOU-ray”) is surrounded by the San Juan Mountains and flanked by seemingly endless groves of aspen trees. It’s the perfect location for photographing fall foliage.
