O nome Edson foi escolhido como homenagem ao inventor da lâmpada elétrica, o americano Thomas Edison. Inicialmente, sua família o chamava de Dico, mas na escola, ele adotou o apelido Pelé, devido a uma confusão na pronúncia do nome de um de seus ídolos no futebol, o goleiro Bilé, que jogava no Vasco.

Edson was given his name as a tribute to the American inventor of the electric light bulb, Thomas Edison. He was originally called Dico by his family, but at school, he picked up the nickname Pelé after a mix-up in the pronunciation of the name of one of his football idols, Vasco goalkeeper Bilé.
