Além de sua despedida do futebol no New York Cosmos, Pelé teve outras duas oportunidades memoráveis de agradecer aos seus fãs. A primeira foi da Seleção Brasileira em 1971, durante um amistoso contra a Iugoslávia no Maracanã. Três anos depois, ele se despediu do Santos, após 18 anos com a camisa do clube, em uma partida contra a Ponte Preta, de Campinas.
