Feeling suPURRstitious this Friday the 13th? 🐈‍⬛

Here’s a black cat whose path we aren’t nervous to cross.

This friendly feline is actually a paper cutout. The artist, Ira Blount, moved to Washington, D.C. after serving in World War II. Always interested in working with his hands, he mastered 15 artisanal crafts, including quilting, origami and needlework.

In this piece, he uses the negative space of cutouts in the black paper to create the texture of the cat’s fur and claws, transforming a simple piece of paper into a playful scene. Do you think the cat will catch the dragonfly?

This artwork is part of our @smithsonianacm’s collection.

Gift of Ira Blount, 2007.
