Photos by @beverlyjoubert | An aptitude for navigating a patchwork of channels and floodplains is a must for the lions of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. It’s also a skill lioness mothers must instill in their offspring from a tender age. Despite potential dangers like lurking crocodiles and temperamental hippos—not to mention lions’ innate distaste for things aquatic—water crossings are an inevitable part of life in this seasonally inundated landscape. Under mom’s watchful eye, this youngster’s gutsy efforts are an important initiation. To survive in this challenging yet bountiful ecosystem, these apex predators must learn to traverse both land and water. To see more of my work, follow me @beverlyjoubert.
