He plucked her from a beauty pageant when she was just 17, selecting her as his wife and marrying her on her 18th birthday in 2007. As the leader of one of the world’s most prolific drug cartels, he could do that. Fourteen years later, in February 2021, Emma was arrested on drug trafficking charges, accused of passing communications between her husband and four of his sons to help the drug-lord escape from prison. She pleaded guilty, waiving her right to a trial, and was released from U.S. custody in Los Angeles County on September 13, 2023, after serving about two and a half years. Emma did what she did willfully and has never claimed victimization.
