“I truly, in my gut, don’t understand why it continues to be as difficult as it is” for women behind the camera, says writer and director #GinaPrinceBythewood. But after three decades in TV and film, she knows that “when shifts happen, women and people of color are usually on the periphery.”

Well before this year’s WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the weather was turning in Hollywood. The box office has yet to fully bounce back from COVID. Budgets for film and TV are set to diminish. Peak TV is over. But what that means for women is of particular concern: Data reveal an appalling persistence of gender disparity behind the camera.

To assess what’s fueling this problem (and how best to address it), ELLE spoke with 26 female creatives and experts in film and TV. They are writers, directors, showrunners, producers, researchers, professors, and executives from a variety of genres and backgrounds, from projects including #DaisyJonesAndTheSix, #TheSummerITurnedPretty, #Bottoms, #Swarm, and more. They include @gpbmadeit, @atticalocke, @emmmaseligman, @gloriakellet, @jennyhan, @katorihall, @leslilinka, @liztigelaar, @mimi.leder, @soozhugh, @tembilocke, and numerous others.
