Sarah Burton bid farewell to the house of @アレキサンダー・マックイーン this evening in Paris with a triumphant spring collection. Burton, who spent 26 years at the label, 12 as creative director, found inspiration in female anatomy, molding leather corsets around her models and honoring their shapes with orchid-like dresses and intricate knitwear. Queen Elizabeth I and Magdalena Abakanowicz, a Polish sculptor whose work decorated the show space, also served as inspiration here; though Burton ultimately dedicated the show to the memory of Lee Alexander McQueen, whose wish, she wrote, was always to empower women. As models took their final walk, David Bowie came on the soundtrack, singing “We can be heroes forever and ever” as Burton hugged and greeted guests who had taken to their feet for a standing ovation.
