When Kolhatkar visited the family there earlier this year, Bankman and Fried were taking care of their son and working to bolster his spirits while they, too, grappled with their new reality. Popular faculty members at Stanford Law School, Bankman and Fried specialized in social fairness and legal ethics, and encouraged their children’s philanthropic ventures. His father served as an important advisor to Bankman-Fried while he built his multi-billion dollar business, and both parents enjoyed substantial rewards in the process—including funding for charitable projects, a $10-million gift, and a $16.4-million beach house in the Bahamas.
