Finding my zen in Kyoto. I love this discreet little temple just down the street from the famous Tofuku-ji temple. I have always loved round windows / openings that are present in a lot of Asian architecture. In Japanese architecture, round windows also symbolize the concept of “mitate”. Mitate means to repurpose, “to look again.” Essentially to enable an object to be perceived in a new way, to contemplate it as if it was something else. Thus, round windows can be seen as an extension of nature, something outside the building which emits natural light, such the sun and the moon.
