“For me, it’s really important that the images have something connected to the past or something timeless.”
Lúa Ribeira’s series Agony in the Garden is a collaboration with young people involved in the emerging Trap and Drill music scene in various cities across her native Spain. The work draws inspiration from the eponymous Bible passage and wider Christian themes, communicated through the natural environment of the images, an arid desert interspersed with frames of a statue of crucified Jesus.
Ribeira removes contextual information relating to the images, yielding an intentional ambiguity that point to more universal themes. What follows is an ominous atmosphere, with Ribeira’s subjects, be they established musicians or members of the surrounding community, participating in a story open to interpretation.
Ribeira’s series is on show as part of the group exhibition Close Enough at @hangar.photoartcenter in Brussels, Belgium, until December 16.
