Being high in these mountains, perched above a deep gorge on an old and rusty bridge, is nothing short of spooky. However, our feelings of being unnerved are nothing next to the emotions felt by the soldiers who moved through this area a hundred years ago. When traveling here late in the day, we risk passing a cold night in the mountains without a sleeping bag—trivial compared with what they must have faced.
