Pride does not always look like arrogance. Sometimes it looks like stumbling around like a fool in front of a crowd of people because you can't stop thinking about yourself - about how you are looking, behaving, sounding, coming across - when all eyes are on you. So you don't act "normal", you can't relax. Sometimes pride looks like being half of yourself because you are afraid of what other people would think of the other half. Too proud to take the risk, even if the other half is the best part. Sometimes pride looks like hiding your blemishes so that people will think you're more perfect than you are. It can look like self-consciousness "humility". But true humility is not conscious of itself at all. Bishop Robert Barron once described humility as a dog racing around the beach after her owner's stick. Totally absorbed in its own joy and too lost in the moment to be aware of itself at all. 💫
