Today is her Birthday, and we're raising funds to ease her family's substantial financial burden as she fights #aplasticanemia Rona Edwards is an adventurous spirit who adores rock climbing, hiking, ballet, Taekwondo, sushi, and ice cream. Always ready to dance, she's an energetic friend-maker. During a routine check-up last fall, a genetic trait suspicion led to a life-saving blood draw for Rona. Low platelets and cell counts were discovered, prompting urgent referrals and a journey through diagnoses and treatments. Months later, Rona's blood counts plummeted during the flu season, raising concerns of Aplastic Anemia, a rare bone marrow disorder. Despite treatments, her condition worsened, leading to frequent transfusions and hospitalization. A stem cell transplant emerged as the best option, but finding a donor was challenging. Her mother's half-matched stem cells became the solution, overcoming insurance hurdles. After advocacy, Rona's transplant journey began on May 7th. Chemotherapy and growth factor injections paved the way, with the transplant occurring on May 18th, followed by engraftment on June 2nd. Recovery requires navigating prophylactic measures against infections for nine to twelve months. Despite confinement to a hospital room for 43 days, Rona's spirits remain high with support from staff, therapists, and virtual summer camp activities. Amidst challenges, Rona and her parents are grateful for medical teams, community support, and the kindness of strangers like Leslie, Rob, and Doug.
