As a Tamil Singaporean, I take pride in the history of this district and honor my memories of this place. Featured here is one of the many flower stalls located right in the heart of Little India, by Buffalo Road. I remember purchasing flowers from these stalls to decorate the altar at home. Among the brightly colored and freshly scented flowers are jasmine, roses, orchids, and marigolds. Customers throng these stalls daily to purchase flowers for a variety of purposes, including worship, adornment, funerals, and weddings. Benzoin resin burns in a clay pot to the side. In Tamil, we call it “sambrani," and it’s used daily in the morning and evenings to ward off evil energy and to invite good energy into one's space. The smell of sambrani reminds me of home.
