Bon voyage, Madame X—see you in a year!⁣⁣⁣ 🖤
⁣⁣⁣
John Singer Sargent’s beloved painting that scandalized 19th-century society is temporarily leaving The Met on July 12, but don’t worry! It will return to our galleries in August 2024.⁣⁣⁣

Stop by the @metamericanwing soon to see her before her journey and (why not!) make like @krystal_bick and have your own conversation with the famed portrait. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Don’t know the story of the scandal? *Ahem* allow us to share: ⁣

Madame Pierre Gautreau was a socialite in Paris known for her artful appearance. Hoping to enhance his reputation, American artist John Singer Sargent painted and exhibited the portrait, emphasizing her daring personal style by showing the right strap of her gown slipping from her shoulder.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
But when the painting was shown at the Salon of 1884, it received more ridicule than praise for its scandalous portrayal of her dress and bare shoulder, devastating both Sargent and Gautreau.⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Sargent repainted the strap and kept the work for more than 30 years until he eventually sold it to The Met—with one stipulation that she be identified only as Madame “X,” on account of the scandal decades earlier. ⁣⁣⁣
