It’s a radical idea, but it’s not without its supporters – 180,000 of them signed a petition back in 2016, calling on London mayor Sadiq Khan to “make the divorce official”. A year later, Tottenham MP David Lammy wrote that independence was necessary for the UK to “retain its position as the pre-eminent global city” post-Brexit. An official party was even formed: the Londependence Party.⁠
