Aloha, it’s Keiko @thealohastudios, back with project number 3: drawing leaf textures. Then we’ll combine everything that we learned from this week’s projects.

Last time I’ve packed my supplies (a Koi pocket watercolor field kit, a Sakura waterbrush, a couple of micron pens, paper towels and a sketchbook) and focused on just painting leaf shapes.

Today, I’m starting by laying down blobs of color. While the paint is drying, I’m collecting a few leaves from the ground and study their patterns. Look at this one! This one has a thick center vein and skinny ones making up this beautiful pattern.

Once the paint has completely dried, I’m sketching the patterns with a Micron pen. No need to fill out all the blobs, just focus on the most compelling parts of the patterns.

This exercise trains your eye to pick up patterns and textures. Once you get started you’ll notice interesting textures more and more!

To combine all three projects, I’m painting abstract shapes as well as leaf shapes and let everything dry. To finish, I’m adding leaf textures with a Micron pen.

I hope you enjoyed this week’s project. Hop over to @thealohastudios for more watercolor explorations and tips & tricks.
