Aloha, it’s Keiko @thealohastudios again. Today I’m showing you project number 2: painting a collection of leaves. Last time I’ve packed my supplies (a Koi pocket watercolor field kit, a Sakura waterbrush, a couple of Micron pens, paper towels and a sketchbook) and created an abstract color swatch.

For today’s project I’m choosing a few leaves and focus on their shape. I’m not looking at details, or where the lights and shadows go, just the shape.

Start with one color. While the paint is still wet, I’m dropping in in a darker color.

This exercise helps you focus on just one thing and not get overwhelmed by the sheer amount of colors, values and textures of the plants. Paint a whole bunch of leaf shapes and witness how you’ll be able to recognize and paint leaf shapes with more ease each time.

Stay tuned for project 3, where I’ll show you how to draw leaf textures and combine all 3 projects into one.
