@omargonval —The Danza de los Voladores, also known as the Palo Volador or “Dance of the Flyers,” is an ancient Mesoamerican ceremony that is still performed today, although it has undergone some modifications. It is believed to have originated with the Nahua, Huastec, and Otomi peoples in central Mexico and then spread throughout Mesoamerica. During the ritual, participants dance and climb a 30-meter pole, from which four of them launch themselves while tied with ropes and descend to the ground. The fifth participant remains atop the pole, playing a flute and drum while dancing. One myth suggests that the ritual was created to request the gods’ intervention in ending a severe drought. While the Totonac people did not originate the ritual, it has become strongly associated with them, particularly in and around Papantla, in the Mexican state of Veracruz. UNESCO has recognized the ceremony as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, aiming to preserve and promote its practice in the modern world. The Aztecs considered the Danza de los Voladores as a symbol of their culture.
