#Matera is located in the Lucanian part of the Murgia, a vast karstic plateau whose predominant element is rock, hence its name from the Latin 'murex'. The earliest important prehistoric settlements and the ancient Sassi districts overlook the sheer drop down to the Gravina, a small watercourse that originates in Apulia and flows into the Bradano, in Basilicata. Over the millennia, this small river has gently carved out its bed and created numerous canyons (the so-called 'gravine') around it. The River Gravina separates the Sassi from the Murgia Materana Park and the Rupestrian Churches, a vast, very inhospitable area with a wealth of archaeological sites, rupestrian churches (more than 150, some of which house perfectly preserved frescoes dating back to the Byzantine era) and floral species (as many as 923, one sixth of all Italian flora and one third of the regional flora). Tuff is the typical rock here; the relative ease with which man has been able to work it allowed the people of Matera, over several millennia, to shape it, digging out dwellings, cellars, storerooms and many rupestrian churches in the canyons. The surrounding territory was thus been adapted to the different needs of man; the most striking example of the cleverness of the people of Matera is the complex system of water conservation, one of the main aspects that led to the inclusion of the Rioni Sassi in the #UNESCO heritage list.
