THE SAN CARLO, A THEATRE OF INFINITE BEAUTY.
Next to Piazza del Plebiscito, one of Naples’ landmarks, stands the Italian temple of opera, built 41 years before La Scala in Milan and 55 before La Fenice in Venice. Building of the San Carlo Theatre in 1737 was commissioned by King Charles of Bourbon, resolute in his intention to give the city a new theatre that represented royal power.
