Okinawa’s brown sugar production dates back to 1623, when the manufacturing technology was imported from China. Today, Okinawa brown sugar is industrially produced exclusively on eight remote islands: Iheya, Ie, Aguni, Tarama, Kohama, Iriomote, Hateruma, and Yonaguni. As each island has distinct growing conditions, sugar cane varieties, and harvesting methods, brown sugar produced in each location also varies in texture and flavor.
