Bees and other pollinators are vital to our ecosystem on Earth! In fact, in places where bees do not live, like on the space station, astronauts sometimes pollinate plants by hand to mimic the fertilization work our little friends do back on Earth. #WorldBeeDay 🦋🌷 🐝

As humanity plans long-duration missions to the Moon and Mars, a key factor is figuring out how to feed crews during their weeks, months, and even years in space. Plants can provide crucial nutrients to supplement the prepackaged foods that can degrade in quality and nutrition during long-term storage. Researchers on Earth and crews aboard the space station are testing various crops and equipment to learn about the challenges of growing plants in space.

Plant Habitat-04 is one of these experiments in which hand pollination techniques were used to transfer pollen from flower to flower. The chiles started growing on July 12, 2021, and represented one of the longest and most challenging plant experiments attempted aboard the orbiting laboratory.
