I had barely slept and the whole week was a complete whirlwind. Signing autographs, press conferences, team meetings, make-up, dinner, photo calls, practice rounds, physio…but here I was in my home country, ready to tee it up in the biggest women’s event in professional golf and today was day 1. The Solheim Cup in Germany. I thought I might not make it off the first tee, or maybe even to the first tee. What if I completely embarrass myself? What if I let down my German fans that have never really seen me play in person? What if I let down my team? My fourball partner? Thoughts swirling in my mind in the distance. A big knot in my stomach and tons of adrenaline pumping through my veins 20 seconds after my alarm clock went off. No. I won’t let that happen again. I let it happen in 2011 in Ireland, but not here. Not now. I’m prepared. By now I know the only thing I can always rely on is the present moment. I know exactly what feel I will focus on over my drive, my irons, my chips and my putts. I have honed in my routine. And I will let nothing distract me from that focus. I sit down and start breathing. Breathing through the knot in my stomach and into my heart. I feel the joy and gratitude for being here. That’s it right here. That’s all I want to give to the crowds and to myself. 100% commitment to the moment, to the shot, to the joy for the game. I repeat this like a mantra. Over and over again until I’m so determined that nothing can deter me.
I step on that first tee. Hands shaking. Heart beating. Mind quiet. I hit the first tee shot and I’m off to having three of the best rounds of golf that I’ve ever had.
