Fashion fun fact: At the end of the 1920s, Coco Chanel was introduced to Samuel Goldwyn, the founding father of Hollywood, in Monaco by their mutual friend Grand Duke Dimitri. (Good name, right?) Goldwyn wanted Coco to come to California to create chic costumes for his leading ladies, which he thought would allure female audiences to his theaters in the early days of the Depression. So, in 1931, Coco took a ship from Paris to New York, and then a train to Los Angeles. She stayed one month and worked on three films. The most known is ‘Tonight or Never,’ which included Gloria Swanson dripping exclusively in Chanel straight from her Paris-based atelier. Coco’s love affair with California was brief—she never came back and film studios thought her costumes weren’t over the top enough. (Apparently, yes, Coco invented “quiet luxury” 90 years ago.) But! Last night in LA, the house of Chanel came back to Tinsel Town for a show that was decidedly more over the top. The house's creative director Virginie Viard replaced old glamour with Venice Beach bodybuilders. There were iridescent unitards and sparkled leg warms and platform tennis shoes that lit up like a rainbow disco. Basically, Barbiecore meets sweaty French disco. After the show, which was held on the lot at Paramount Studios—take that, Goldwyn!—the venue was turned into a roller rink and I gorged on cheeseburgers while Snoop Dogg performed. Just when I was starting to wonder what Coco would have thought about Hollywood today, someone told me Paris Hilton was DJing in fingerless gloves and I got lost on a dance floor. Thanks for an incredible 36 hours in LA! @シャネル
