Although these are three very different photographers, their images unite in their interrogation of humanity, nature and hope.⁠ ⁠ One of the three works by Alec Soth on display is from his photobook, I Know How Furiously Your Heart Is Beating, which takes its name from a line in Wallace Stevens' short poem, The Gray Room. This series of large-format color photographs isn't about any particular place or population, as Soth wanted to get "back to the fundamentals of portraiture – just that one-on-one encounter, without it being layered with all this other meaning." ⁠ ⁠ "I love the luxury of being able to just stare at another person," Soth says – a pleasure that Nick, a model who the photographer met by chance during a trip to Los Angeles, seems to understand: reclined in jeans on a shaggy blanket like an ad for either, he seems complicit in the seesawing of intimacy and distance.⁠ ⁠ Explore the Magnum Gallery's Photo London curation further at the link in bio. ⁠ ⁠ PHOTO: Nick.
