BOWIE MEETS PETE AND DUD 50 YEARS AGO TONIGHT
“They pulled in just behind the fridge...” *
This image of an amused David Bowie was taken fifty years ago this evening, when he met up with Peter Cook and Dudley Moore following the duo's Behind The Fridge presentation at London’s Cambridge Theatre on 9th May, 1973.
Bowie was a big fan of the pair and had been for some time, years later he would slip into character with Brian Eno on occasion, as remembered by Brian on David’s passing in 2016: “David’s death came as a complete surprise, as did nearly everything else about him. I feel a huge gap now. We knew each other for over 40 years, in a friendship that was always tinged by echoes of Pete and Dud.”
In 1971 David had asked Moore if he would play piano on Hunky Dory, it wasn’t to be. However, Bowie managed to sneak the title of the Pete and Dud show into the lyric of Young Americans, as quoted above.
Oh, to have been a fly on the wall during that backstage meeting. Captions suggesting just what Mr Cook had uttered to make Bowie smile so, are encouraged in the comments section.
* The lyric really is fridge, not, as is often misheard, bridge. This fact was confirmed by Bowie himself.
