GORUCK GAMES // EVOLUTION 002: HIGH WALKER

“I bet you’re thinking, what is a place like me doing in a girl like this?”

I overheard this quote while my roommate was watching “The Mummy”, and it stuck with me because I thought it was funny. Throughout this evolution, it kept replaying in my head. As we ran through ocean water & fog with 30# rucks on our backs, saturated socks & shoes squishing with every step, and a 50# flag pole held like a torch at the front of our mad assembly charging through the night.. the hilarity of our current reality made me want to both burst out laughing and crying at the same time. This, however, is what I’m here for.

Evolution 2 turned out to be a 16 mile ruck on the beach, starting at sunset, and continuing through the dark. We began by getting wet & sandy, assuring that discomfort was prevalent. The instructions were simple: run. And don’t stop until you’re told to. Which led us all to face the question: can I keep going when there’s no end in sight? Better yet, how do you pace a race of unknown distance? Run fast, but not too fast. Don’t be first, but don’t be last.

It was a spiritual thing. Eventually, all things come to an end. But you must keep going. The philosophical parallels to life were overwhelming, and they take time to reflect on and fully sink your teeth into. But I bit down hard on this one, and kept putting one foot in front of the other.

At first I just told myself to keep up. And I did. I stayed with the group for the first 4 miles. A cadre member told us to turn around, so I prayed that our starting point would be our finish line, totaling 8 miles. But we kept running. Another 4 miles in the opposite direction, then back. 16 miles total.

I started to fall behind after mile 4. I could see green glow sticks on rucks elusively in the distance. I was alone most of the time, and feeling left behind evoked a sense of desperation.

I found spurts of energy. The ocean water splashing over my shoes seeped some life back into me. Doubts crept in. Pain. My feet hurt like hell. I ran out of water. I’d pass a few other lone soldiers from time to time. Hey brother. Hey sister. Keep going.

And we did.
