Congresswomen Frederica Wilson and Lucy McBath both felt called to share their stories in the fight to protect reproductive rights. During a congressional debate on abortion policy, Rep. Wilson spoke for the first time about carrying the dead fetus of her baby for more than two months in 1969, because her doctor was prohibited by law from inducing labor pre-Roe. At a House Judiciary Committee hearing on abortion, Rep. McBath recounted a similarly painful story of carrying her dead baby for two weeks in 1993 after suffering a fetal demise due to complications from fibroids.

With the future of abortion pills hanging in the balance, the widespread criminalization of pregnancy, and the shocking number of Black maternal deaths in the U.S. (Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women), ELLE Senior Editor @minutaglio facilitated a conversation between the congresswomen in Washington, D.C., that feels more necessary than ever.

“Women are fierce, forceful, and we don’t give up,” Rep. McBath says. “This movement is just getting started. Woe be to those who try and restrict us.” Click the link in bio for more.
