Take a closer look at ‘The Reading Girl’, a portrait of sculptor and artist’s model Hetty Pettigrew (1867–1953) by English painter Theodore Roussel. After many years on display, the painting has turned a discoloured yellow as a result of the thick varnish that Roussel would have used when he painted the work.
Following a visit to Tate Britain’s conservation studio, the painting will look cleaner, fresher and the colours will more closely reflect those that Roussel would have used in 1887. ✨
