Our Aboriginal youth program Burbangana - a Dharug word of the Sydney language group meaning ‘take my hand and help me up’ - is very proud to have completed a year-long project with the Brungle/Tumut Aboriginal Community.

The program focused on cultural practices of the Wolgalu/ Wiradjuri people in the conservation of the Northern Corroboree Frog – a critically endangered species.

As part of the Gyak/ Northern Corroboree Frog InSituProject, Burbangana students and Taronga’s Aboriginal trainee students attended cultural camps with Wolgalu/ Wiradjiru community at Tumut in March 2022, November 2022, and March 2023 where cultural and conservation knowledge about the frog was shared between different groups of students, educators, scientists, field experts and Wolgalu/Wiradjuri people.

For the first time during the latest camp, Bangarra Dance Theatre worked with Taronga in developing Gyak's story through dance and sound, as part of community engagement and conservation work, which will remain the Cultural Intellectual Property of the local Community.
It has been a privilege for Taronga to coordinate these workshops, and we couldn’t have done it without our partners who support Corroboree Frog Conservation; Dave Hunter at DPE, Brungle/Tumut LALC, Brungle Primary School, Tumut High School students in the Clontarf and Burabinya Programs, University of Wollongong, NPWS, Buugang Wambaal Project and Bangarra Dance Theatre. #forthewild
