Snowscapes, Hokkaido. # Layered landscapes: Hokkaido - Japan's most northerly island, is one of the snowiest places in the world, where annual snowfall can average over 200 to 300 inches thanks to frigid Siberian winds crashing into the mountains of northern Japan. The perfect place to find layers of larch and birch trees, planted to provide wind- and snow-breaks, but like all things Japanese, the practical never supercedes the artistic, as seen in the contrasting patterns formed by the grouping of trees on Biei Hill.
