Swan Lake: Whooper Swans on Lake Kussharu, Akan Mashu National Park, Hokkaido, Japan. These “snowbirds” from Siberia stop here every winter on their migratory path way to breeding grounds further south. Though this caldera lake is almost completely frozen, the swans find open water along the banks due to the naturally heated sands and warm ground waters from volcanic hot springs that flow into it.
