Here’s the second instalment by one @MichaelOlsen, who not only attended the Bowie show in Phoenix fifty years ago tonight, but also had the foresight to film a few songs. Mr O has kindly given us the exclusive to share that footage and he's also written up his recollections of the show...Here follows heavily edited excerpts... + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + Our appetite for this new music hadn’t been sated following our excursion to San Francisco a week earlier, to see for a second time this new act David Bowie and The Spiders From Mars. That itself had followed our attending their Los Angeles debut a week before that, at the sold-out Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. We were buzzing then, still buzzing now. It was a great weekend away. But was it now to be just a memory? Please no! We couldn't get the sonic and visual assault out of our heads. It was all we talked about. Over studies it was a mantra: “Again! Can we do it again?” And as it happened, the orbit of David Bowie's US tour was to cycle nearby for one final stop, this time dropping into Arizona, specifically Phoenix and its “Celebrity Theater”. Another four hundred-plus mile journey? Let’s go! We made it to the theater Sunday evening and bought tickets with seat markings we hardly needed - the show was so lightly attended we were all invited to gather on the steps at the foot of the stage, which never did spin. Based on my memory of the KMET tape and the shows I’d already seen, I knew which songs I wanted to film.
