GEMS FROM A GEM My last intermediate intensive I had the honor of inviting my West African Teacher growing up Jerome Hunter @larocquebey! 🙏🏽🙌🏽💙💙💙💙💙💙 This is what you would call “an Old School Man” from his morals to his steps, it all comes from Foundation, guidance and Love. He was correcting one of the students and said “you know where they let you get away with that? In the free classes” hahahaha My kind of humor 😎 And I know I correct my students but it’s refreshing to see others who care just as much, if not more than you. His abundance of truth makes me learn and laugh all at once. I know the dancers had such a blast. There was a moment at the end of the class when he told us to do the last part of a combo and every single one of us was smiling from ear to ear for no reason but enjoying the moment. He was the highlight of the intensive and I was able to regain that feeling I had in my youth that I miss so so much. Thank you so much for blessing us with an amazing class. Love You! I miss constantly learning. Teaching non stop, giving all my gems for years, it can be draining and feel like you have nothing left for yourself. Teachers like him are a reminder….there’s a lot more where that came from. My training from when I was a kid and teen still challenge me til this day. When I was working with Beyonce 2006, I saw Jerome was in the next room at Alvin Ailey and when I introduced him to beys dancers he offered to teach a few steps and some of those steps wound up being in “DeJa Vu” but not taught by him. 💁🏽‍♀️that’s the industry for ya Welllll…..i tried 🤷🏽‍♀️ This is before the world changed and got woke.
