🎬 ‘Falling Slowly’ full version #emilyinparis @kev.dias 🤍…

This was a special one for me, for reasons that I’ve never shared with anyone til now. I hesitated mostly because it felt like a personal full-circle thing to hold in my own heart and privately work through… one that I didn’t want to burden anyone else with or jinx at the time that we filmed this. But in reflecting, I hope maybe my realizations can maybe help other young performers, artists, or anyone really along your journeys…

Firstly, this video is a never-before-seen take of the whole version of Mindy and Benoit’s duet in @emilyinparis. We always knew that only the first part of the song would appear onscreen in the episode, but for our final take, amazing director @katinovsky asked if we’d like to sing it all the way through so we could feel where the characters may end up emotionally. It was freeeezing cold (this is the day I got tonsillitis), but Katina you have no idea how much that meant to me…

I first heard ‘Falling Slowly’ when I saw ‘ONCE’ the musical on Broadway almost a decade ago. Cristin Milioti’s work as the leading lady opened up a gateway of what I realized acting & singing could be (still one of my fave onstage performances ever). I remember thinking ‘The Girl’ was a dream role now, and a close friend said to me, “oh, I could totally see you play her, maybe someday there will be an All-Asian production somewhere you can be in!”
I know I know.
But what I find most uncomfortable in this memory is not that comment. I was completely used to those. It was that my immediate thought in response was, “how silly of me to think they’d seriously consider casting an Asian girl for this Broadway production. Maybe if I learn the violin, I could audition for the supporting role one day. Maybe even understudy the lead… etc.”..
I didn’t hesitate at all to agree with my friend because I’d truly internalized that I didn’t belong or have a right to that space… to be the one helming that kind of storytelling on Broadway where I’d never seen an Asian woman originate a leading role in a show simply about a woman, a man, love, music, and connection.
So I resolved to (continued in comments ↓)
