If you have strong feelings about anything - anything! - including the language you use for your art, that's your choice. Too many loud voices are making a living trying to convince you to *accept change* *diversify your income streams* *create a bond with your audience* - hell, they're not wrong if you want to secure some sort of conventional career in music. But all of this could be to the detriment of your mental health and your relationship with your art. The loudest voice of all should be telling you to make space for yourself to do it any way that feels right, and then to know the rare times to be flexible around that. And to simply enjoy making music, even to have ambitions for it (to make a Talking Book, a Cupid Deluxe, a When I Get Home), not to see each project as a production line of material for consumption. A few years ago I felt like the music world had fragmented into islands, similar in appearance, but where completely different moral or artistic systems existed on each. Some islands are money motivated, some are community minded, others are uninterested in communicating with the outside world. That's all good, parallel systems and ethos seem healthy to me. The issue is when loud voices like the one in the tweet above are all you seem to hear in your artistic world, telling you you're wrong. Just remember it's a voice from another island, and in all likelihood they're only describing the conditions where they are. Strength to the music makers ❤️」1月25日 20時41分 - kindnessmusic
