Amidst the straggling end of lockdown in the UK (we hope) and the cacophony of 💔headlines, I’ve needed to recalibrate. To see hope and unbounded creativity. That means sitting down with a group of this year’s @mafcsm graduate students that instead of doing their big razzmatazz show physically during LFW have presented their work virtually in an experience housed online (link in bio), with @michelelamy__ ’s hypnotic voiceover bringing you into their universe. “I DARE YOU…”

I found it interesting the different approaches and aesthetics that emerged. Some took to isolation and confronting themselves with gusto. Like Elisa Trombatore @dreaming_eli and her subversion of female gaze via the pole dance. Or @Genevieve_Florence_Devine and her bricolaged garments, layered with memories. Bedroom creation manifesting in intimate ways that we’ll still crave post pandemic.

Or maybe it’s ok to revel in isolation and the melancholy of it. Keith Mosberger certainly did with his rumpled, bias-cut, melding into bed tailoring and slip dresses. To hide away in these clothes feels cathartic.

But some took the sign of these times on a leftfield path. Antonio Castro @ant.oniocastro imagined a Portuguese pagan winter solstice ritual of initiating boys into a glitchy Zoom party. Their textiles, which Castro either up cycled or sourced from factories near his hometown, are spliced and cut, undelineated by gender or historicism. They reflect perhaps a newfound fluidity in creativity that will have emerged from this year.

These are designers who have had to create in a vacuum, without physical interaction with their peers and under extraordinary circumstances. They’ve adapted, manoeuvred this mind fuck and emerged triumphant - maybe better equipped to work in a new normal, whatever that may be
