The criminalization of s€x work compromises s€x workers’ health and safety by driving s€x work underground. Criminalization includes everything from criminalizing the sale and purchase of s€xual services, to blanket prohibitions on management of s€x work. Criminalization makes it harder for s€x workers to negotiate terms with clients, work together with other s€x workers for safety, and carry condoms without fear that they will be used as evidence of pr0stituti0n. S€x workers in many settings report extreme levels of violence and harassment in connection with their work, including from clients, managers, and police. Criminalization makes it difficult for s€x workers to report rights violations, especially by the police, because they are vulnerable to incarceration, further abuse, and retribution. This perpetuates stigma, violence, and impunity, which further endanger s€x workers’ health and safety. It would also help advance equality in the LQBTQ community, especially for trans women of color who are often profiled and harassed whether or not they are actually s€x workers.
