Growing up in the Virgin Islands, @TiphanieYanique found full expressions of Blackness at Carnival. Now, in the States, she tried to show the same to her children, but COVID-19 had other plans. “2020 Carnival would have been my children’s first opportunity to know their bodies as so safe that they can dance wildly in the public street,” writes Yanique. “The quarantining of COVID-19 took not just the safety of my children’s health; it took an opportunity of existential safety, which is the first safety.” Read Yanique’s full essay at the link in bio.
