Photo by Robbie Shone @shonephoto / For decades scientific research has been active throughout the giant caves of Sarawak, Borneo, to improve our understanding of the present-day geochemistry from the rainwater through to the caves. This information is important for interpreting the climate records in the stalagmites. Similar to trees, stalagmites (pictured) often contain annual growth layers, which record small variations in the hydrology. They provide unique records of past climate change over thousands of years.
