I was verbally assaulted and refused entry to the elevator by a member of security staff without provocation. A bystander spoke up and said “you can’t talk to her like that,” but all Mandalay Bay and MGM Resorts have done is shrug responsibility and accountability. On my way out of the elevator, I was called a racist and sexist term by another guest of the hotel IN FRONT OF MY CHILDREN (ages 8 and 10). When I reported the incident of hate speech to hotel staff, I was told that the hotel doesn’t interfere with conflict between guests. Meanwhile my partner had security called ON HIM for coming to find out what happened. After sharing the incident with my community on social media, Mandalay Bay and MGM now come forward with a wall of scripted responses and no accountability. Their excuse (after being called-in on social media) was that security was dealing with another emergency, yet security didn’t feel the need to bring this up when my partner asked what happened. Why is MGM tolerant of hate speech and hostile to Black people? The answers are clear: they are more interested in upholding wyte supremacist structures than in the safety and dignity of Black people. Instead of calling security on my partner and offering insincere apologies, MGM should have taken accountability by: A. Reprimanding the security staff member B. Condemned the hate speech from the other guest C. Asked the other guest with the foul mouth to leave the hotel At this point, I am calling on my community to help communicate that the ways they handled the situation with the both the hotel security member and the other guests were WRONG, harmful, and problematic.
