Despite the bright future ahead of him, on February 26, 2012 the17-year old Trayvon was racially profiled, harassed, and killed while visiting his father in Sanford, Florida by George Zimmerman. Zimmerman was ultimately acquitted in 2013, an event that led to the Florida-based Dream Defenders 30-day occupation of the Florida Capitol and the emergence of the #blacklivesmatter hashtag on Facebook.  In July 2013, a memorial was dedicated to Trayvon at the Goldsboro Westside Historical Museum, a Black history museum in  Sanford. And, although he was never able to attend either the University of Miami or Florida A&M University, his dream schools, Trayvon was posthumously awarded a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical science from Florida Memorial University, a historically Black university in Miami Gardens, Florida of which his mother Sabrina is also an alumna.
