On Feb. 11, the Biden Administration announced a plan to begin processing an estimated 25,000 people in Mexico with active cases out of the "Remain in Mexico" program and into the U.S. Phase one of the federal government’s plan to begin processing asylum seekers—up to about 300 per day, at two ports of entry—is scheduled to start on Feb. 19, the Department of Homeland Security said. The announcement was met with enthusiasm by lawyers and advocates who have long criticized the policy—which requires asylum seekers to wait out their asylum case in Mexico—as inhumane and cruel for forcing many asylum seekers to live in dangerous conditions, writes Jasmine Aguilera.
