I’m not sure my mom necessarily wanted me to become an engineer, but she wanted me to be good at math. . I was in a post-graduate program for mechanical engineering when I came across #CIA at a recruiting fair. I was actually at the fair representing my graduate program and had gotten turned around at the convention center when a CIA recruiter spotted me and asked me about my background. I told the recruiter that I wasn’t really in the market, but in all reality I think CIA found me at somewhat of a crossroads. I had, by that point, come to a realization that I wasn’t looking for your typical engineering job. . I was hired as a science, technology, and weapons analyst. I remember once as a young analyst, I was on a team briefing an undersecretary for defense. We were all in the briefing room getting settled when he walked in and sat down next to me. He pulled out a piece of paper and said “we’re here because of this.” He pointed to the paper and I recognized it as a product that I had written. In the margins, there was a handwritten note: “what are we going to do about this? – Rumsfeld [then Secretary of Defense].” That was an eye-opening moment for me. . I laugh about this, but it’s kind of nice to know that the person you’re dating (and future spouse, in my case) has been through a thorough background investigation.
