(Small reading from my essay in Moms Don’t Have Time - Out Feb 16th)

The most recent manuscript I have written for my next children’s book is a story about loving each other because of our differences, not in spite of them. I think this is an important and timely message today, and I think it starts in the home, in how we relate to those we love most. Hopefully, if we don’t try to reform everyone we love to be just like us, we will see how each colour in the tapestry of life is needed to create the full beauty of the greater picture.

If I can accept the things in my son that I don’t understand and be vulnerable, honest and strong about the things in me that he doesn’t understand, then maybe that tolerance and acceptance will spill over to our neighbours, to our community and to strangers.

If ever there was a time to teach our children tolerance - of the right and the left, of the black and the white, of the cis and the queer, of the rich and the poor - it is now, in a time when our culture is so desperately divided by media manipulation.

I don’t want to manipulate my son. I want to expose him, guide him and accept him as he is.

I write about this and more in my essay in the upcoming book Moms Don’t Have Time by Zibby Owens. I hope it and all the other thoughtful and personal essays in the anthology touch your heart and spirit in these lonely and strenuous times.
