Freezing the future Dr Rebecca Hobbs and Dr Justine O'Brien are two of Taronga's female scientists who are playing a key role in protecting the Great Barrier Reef by cryopreserving cells of reef-building coral species in the largest frozen repository of living coral in the world!

The team collected and preserved coral samples during the spawning event last December and from this banked three new coral species into the Taronga CryoDiversity Bank, with the Great Barrier Reef collection now having 29 different coral species represented.

These precious coral samples are stored at both Taronga Zoo Sydney and in Dubbo. Throughout these 10 years, our team has worked collaboratively to develop and apply new technologies to preserve cells. The work demonstrates the ability of cryopreserved coral sperm to fertilise fresh coral eggs and produce juvenile corals. This important work to protect the Great Barrier Reef is being highlighted on International Day for Women and Girls in Science.

Hear from Senior Reproductive Biologist, Dr Rebecca Hobbs about the program that is securing the current genetic diversity of the reef.
