I mean yeah hit singles/hit albums/cool videos are aight but on the 35th anniversary of this album we need to reframe how we speak on this work. This wasn’t an ordinary release. This is history. I know we were framing the “this is nobodies kid sis” talk but that is STILL an insult because it frames it to MJ instead of really acknowledging what this is: Jan’s album shut everyone DOWN. The reason why we don’t hold it in the light that your saaaay #TalkingBook your #TheresARiotGoinOn your #LetsGetItOn your #BitchesBrew your #DirtyMind your #OffTheWall—-all paradigm shifting moments in black music—-is because black art & most importantly black art from women really hasn’t been allowed to play reindeer games. This isn’t a “well he right cause it sold a cajillion/had so many top 10 singles” Aint about that. Timing was everything & Feb 4th 1986 was the PERFECT moment to drop this unexpected bomb. Black music was at an odd crossroads: Boogie was disco’s ashes. All the titans of the 70s had to go pop because as with everything in black life you had to code switch to survive, & the rule book holder at the time was in caterpillar/butterfly mode making some amazing adventurous music (Prince y’all)—-but that also left space open to fill. Somebody was gonna occupy that FONK throne. Luther & Anita & newcomer Whitney were building the house of Retro Nouveau Soul (termed by @315nelsongeorge) —-Motown wasn’t the force it was 25 years ago & no one was around to speak to the kids. Enter this album. The drums were harder than #Mantronix or #ArtOfNoise or anything coming from #LarrySmith or @RickRubin’s stable. @ジミー・ジャム & @flytetymelewis were pushing the #minneapolissound to the limits WAY beyond #Oberheim & #LinnDrum programming. This was indeed the first #NewJackSwing lp: attitude & substance & sexy.
