Shortly before the first meeting of Myanmar's new parliament was to open, the country's military forces took control in a coup and arrested de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other democratically elected officials. Declaring a state of emergency, the military justified its move by alleging that the 2020 November elections were flawed.⁠⁠

Myanmar had long been an isolated nation ruled by a military junta until 2011, when a democratically elected civilian government assumed control with Aung San Suu Kyi's party having majority representation. Her reputation as a democratic proponent suffered greatly with the perpetration of the Rohingya genocide.⁠⁠

Magnum photographer @chien_chi_chang visited Myanmar several times from 2010 to 2017: to photograph opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi after she was released from house arrest in November 2010, and to document life, protests and economic activities in the country alongside the Rohingya community.⁠⁠
